We're assigned this week to discuss all the people at Iowa State that may potentially be an aid to us as we continue our education and look to get into the real world, or move on to higher education. I've come to realize that there's a great number of professors who would be great for writing recommendation letters for me, but they're also currently doing all sorts of research that i'm very interested in taking part in to gain experience. Research is something that I've wanted to take part in, and with my major in Kinesiology, I have a lot of access to work study and being a part of the various research teams.
There are professors who conduct studies in areas like excercise psychology, sport psychology, excercise physiology, nutrition and preventative medicine. My option is pre-chiropractic, so preventative medicine is an important area of research, and i'm curious to learn more about the effects of excercise and nutrition and how it affects the body and how the effects can be different depending on the person. I'm all about health and helping people maintain it, so this research would benefit me greatly.
My current counselor has been a great help in telling me about this research, and the next step for me is to apply to take part in what's going on now. No professor that I know of has done work with chiropractic specifically, but the types of research would benefit me because when I move on to graduate school and eventually have my own private practice, I can apply what I learned and have more knowledge and can diversify my business based on not only chiropractic care, but also the benefits of diet, excercise and nutrition and how they can enhance health.
The qualities I need in a mentor are simply having similiar interests as me in health and fitness, and there are certainly a great number of professors who share enthusiam in health that would be willing to help me further my education.

It is good that you are willing to diversify your knowledge. Most people would only want to focus on what they know best.
ReplyDeleteHaving a mentor with similar interest is a good idea, lately I've like having mentors outside of academics that will mentor me not just me in academics. its nice.
ReplyDeleteEnthusiasm and similar interest are a must. there is no doubt about that.
ReplyDeleteThat is great that you have a advisor that is full of information. It would be a great experience and awesome on the resume if you could do research with one of your professors.
ReplyDeleteResearch is great. Also introduces you to many new faculty. Maybe you could get your name on a paper or something and become famous.

ReplyDeleteGood luck finding a mentor. With your openess and willingness to try all sorts of things should help you there.
ReplyDeleteYour advisor sounds helpful like mine. That will help out a lot!
ReplyDeleteSince you haven't really found a professor who fits with you as a mentor, maybe you could find someone in the Ames community who could mentor you. Having someone outside of an academic setting could give you more of an edge.
ReplyDeleteYou and I have a lot in common with our overall goals because my overall goal as well is to help people with their health in making them feel their best. These are good background things to look for in almost any science major and, like you said, it relates well to health in the chiropractic area.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be great for you to be able to add some diversity to your college education. You'll really stand out when you finish your pre-chiropractic classes if you get all of this experience.
ReplyDeleteResearch is a great way to get to know some different professors.
ReplyDeleteI wish my advisor was better and I could count on him more. My advisor from the math department is not my favorite, but thats great for you! Good Luck!
